Repair or Replace? How to Know What Your Windshield Actually Needs
Not every crack means you need a brand-new windshield. In fact, many GulfCoast drivers end up overpaying for a full replacement when a high-quality repair would have done the trick.
As a local specialist, I always tell my customers to look at three things: Size, Depth, and Location.
1. The Size Test
Generally, if a chip is smaller than a quarter, it can be repaired. If a crack is longer than a credit card, you are likely looking at a replacement to ensure your safety.
2. The Depth
A windshield is a "sandwich" of glass and plastic. If the damage goes through the inner layer of glass, a repair won't be enough to hold the bond.
3. The Location
If the damage is directly in the driver’s line of sight or right on the edge of the glass, a replacement is often recommended. Edge cracks spread quickly due to the vibration of the road.
